Formed in August, 2011, The Smart Grid Voltage Conservation Alliance (SGVCA) aims to provide utilities with an end-to-end voltage conservation program. SGVCA has the two-fold goal of enabling operational efficiency for utilities and advancing the business case for voltage conservation.
The initial field study was conducted successfully at Entergy Gulf States Louisiana, L.L.C., and will drive commercial application for a voltage conservation program for utilities.
Reducing voltage by as little as four to six percent can result in a three to five percent increase in energy conservation, but most utilities are currently unable to effectively manage voltage variations because of the lack of visibility in the distribution area network. By leveraging the convergence of Distribution Automation (DA) and advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) for voltage monitoring, utilities will be able to gain additional insight from the substation down to the customer endpoint and increase operational efficiencies through voltage conservation while extending the capabilities and advantages of AMI.
Founding members: Elster (NYSE: ELT), ABB (NYSE: ABB), Survalent and Entergy.

Entergy Tests AMI Voltage Optimization What else can the smart meters do?
Many people working in smart grid argue that the smart meter, which got so much attention (and stimulus funds) in recent years, is just an endpoint. Real smart grid is on the grid itself, providing two-way communication and more efficient power flow across the distribution system... read more
